I saw unfinished rudder blades on EBay for a fairly
reasonable price. They were made from red oak.
I asked if the rudder had dowels, and was told yes.
Is red oak suitable for a Sunfish blade?
Red oak is not the wood of choice for Sunfish rudder blades. It is heavy, and not as rot resistant as mahogany.
The Alcort company used Philippine mahogany back in the day, but that wood is almost impossible to get in the USA today. African mahogany is just as good and available and the lighter shade African mahogany looks almost identical to the Philippine mahogany. I will be selling several new style African mahogany blades as soon as the varnish dries. Watch the For Sale section here on the Sunfish Forum.
