Removing old names

I want to remove a name on my transom. It looks like regular stickers. What do you guys recommend for removing them?
 
A sharp puddy knife, try to lift up the corners and get then peel them off. then use paint thinner and a rage to remove the glue left behind. It will never really go away, that area will be less faded than the area that was in the sun all these years.
 
3M Marine waxer/restorer might help get the color more so back to the original so the difference will not be as noticable. Goof Off works very well to get off the residue...funny name, I know but it really does work.

I would not, however, use Acetone or any product like that becausee that apparently softens the gelcoat.
