Yep if you check some of my earlier posts you'll see what I've done with a small Minkota electric.
Disadvantages of small gas outboard: Noise, vibration, fumes, messy gas/oil, higher purchase and upkeep costs, can't use on many small lakes, to name a few! The main purpose for a sailboat is to sail. The motor is very useful to negotiate docking and my setup allows for sails up/down while underway. The tandem battery setup I engineered gives about 90 minutes of powering at 50% level, good enogh. So if the wind died out it's feasible to get back home without a paddle!
Like I said, check out my posts and feel free to chime in if you have any questions.
Cheers!
