Mystery device on a Laser

    See attached pictures.

    Anybody have an idea what this plate was used for? There is nothing under it.

    Looks like something was meant to be put on it and twisted to lock in place.

    I guess it could be. Do people normally mount a compass on a small sailboat like this?

    Racers do use compasses from time to time, especially when there are no 'easy' landmarks.

    Yes, tactical compasses. Great for confirming wind shifts when racing.

    That looks very much like the three-point mount for the Plastimo compass that was about all that was available for the Laser in the 1970s.
