Cut-Off Bow Video

The cut-up hull in Lee's video is from the very old AlCort days of Sunfish construction.
The Vanguard people (much later) did a neater job with the expanding foam. Note that they used tape to limit the 'overflow'.

Alcort was advancing pretty quick. They were early into mass producing fiberglass boats. Using foam blocks with spray foam to attach was smart. Spray foam was new. Amazing how thin the glass is but those boats were strong and lasted. Alcort was making and selling as fast as they could. When you drove on the highways back then you saw a lot of cars with aunfish on the roofs.

Interesting to see the mass production compromises. Using spray foam as structural adhesive was creative and risky. Clearly it paid off given that 50 year old hulls are still in play.

That hull is 55 years old and has probably been abused as a rental. Maintenance and care are required. It's too bad that they cut it up, we'd love to get a hold of one that wasn't full of Gulf of Mexico sea bottom. Took 5 pounds of dirt out of one once that had to have been mud at one point before fixing 1968 MERCI up..

This 1971 fish had been used as a workbench, every bit stripped off of it and there were about 20 pegboard spaced drill holes in the deck. We got "RAY OF HOPE because folks were too lazy to take it to the dump. Alan sent us a care package of hardware and coaming and we got her back to her natural habitat.

You know I love that green deck. This looks like my newly acquired '69 here in northern Wisconsin. Just put it away today as I have to get back home. I drive back west on Tuesday and wish I could take it with me!

Are you saying that there is hope for the rest of us, with our garden-variety waterlogged and broken boats?
:)
Love the trainer colors on Merci! Who does your colored sails?

Norcal, I'm curious why the green held up better than red. Of course she came home crusty.

And Tops, yes, there is hope. MERCI came home like this...

ANd the deck was the good side. I'm not sure what happened to the hull.

We get beautiful sails from Schurr Sails Pensacola, talk to Hunter. Here's two of his sails, we picked the colors.

Hi Signal, not sure why the green seems better. On my boat, we had planned to buff out the deck. It cleaned up so well, that we never got around to it. Rick and I hiked the Greenfish up to the garage for the winter. The Oldfish went into the top of the boathouse for the winter, and the Cyclone 13 stays in the lower part of the boathouse. I am back in California and miss having a lake in my front yard. I did buy a practice race sail from Intensity for my Califish , today.

Hey, what's that hull between the red and white sailed Sunfish (Oldfish?) and the Cyclone 13?

- Venturi Man
Hey Venturi Man,
That's one of Rick's Sunfish. He bought it for $200 from someone on the Lake, last summer. His main Sunfish is behind me in this photo. Here's a photo of that hull in action. I'm looking forward to the new sail. The one I bought for my Greenfish really seemed to increase performance and, as you know, it has the reinforced grommet for adding controls. Maybe we can work on it over at your place?
