building roof racks

hi, i have a GMC safari van with roof racks but they are not high enough so the cleats hold the bow off the racks, we have just been putting a 2x4 between the racks and hull to get it just high enough but there is still weight on it. i want to build a wood rack i can put on the safari's racks. does any one have pictures or ideas of what i can do? thanks

Q&D fix is to just double up the 2x4's to give you enough clearance. If you want to get a little fancier, you cut the top 2x4 in 1/2 and raise the outer ends of each piece 1" to fit the profile of the deck.

Little hard to tell from the pic, but assuming this model still has rain gutters, if it does, as a complete and fairly inexpensive alternative, read this:

agreed, the fancy version would be to profile the rack to fit the hull, the easy version is to double up the 2x4's,

you could also cut small notches to help the 2x4's bite on the rack, that might help with loading and unloading the hull
