Well i just picked up a beat up sunfish and i was wondering if the HIN is just like powerboats where the last 2 numbers signifies the year it was built?

Depends on the year. Before Nov. 1972 there wasn't a legal requirement. Sunfish numbers ran sequential at that time. 1972 - 1984 the last two numbers were the model year. The last letter was the code for the month made. After 84 the last 2 numbers are the model year and third to last the year built. Confused yet? There's a summary of the Coast Guard ID system at Sunfish_Sailor: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sunfish_sailor
