Mine came out. (my fault though as the rudder popped out the bottom and only the pin was holding it on and then stresses made it pop out while sailing.
I cut an inspection port that I wanted to do anyway. (ran into some foam on the outside edge of the port). I used stainless hardware, flange...
So far in the 2 inspection ports I"ve cut, this photo held true for my '69 sunfish. It may give you an idea on what is on the other side of any fiberglass you may want to cut.

Massapoag Sunfish Fleet News: Birth of a Sunfish
I purchased this from sunfish direct to repair my '69 sunfish:
Sunfish, Sunfish Bailer Housing w/Ball, 91029 SUN-91029 $15.00
I just reused the plastic flange nut and rubber stopper and I was Good to Go
I have no idea why adding the plastic flange nut and rubber stopper increases it to $40-$45...
I got the muffler clamp idea from someone posting about using a Sunfish sail on some other boat.

Yes, I installed a 3 or 4" plastic cleat just to side of daggerboard.
At :41 in the first vid I untie Halyard line and 1:00 I tie it to cleat
2:15 in the dolphins...
This is what I use as seen in the vids.
Unimar Telescopic Mini Paddle - Walmart.com
It collapses and I throw it in the cockpit.
I had started to think about clips to hold it on the deck up front but have yet to decide to do so.
Right now, my wife or son are usually on the Jet Skis when I'm out...
This was the 2nd time I had the sunfish out. Saw dolphins while I was out.
Dolphins @ about 4:35
There was about 20 of them and captured some behind me on the go pro.
We've spotted them while out on the Jet Skis but in the sailboat, they were all around me.
I used hockey stick tape. Twist it some as you wrap around and it will make a hump that won't slip over. My experiance with electrical tape like the manual said is that electrical tape degrades in heat. I would have used duct tape but I had the hockey tape handy. As a noob, I found it useful...
For now, I have a muffler clamp supporting the gooseneck on the mast. Until I figure something else out or get good enough to do things quickly w/o needing it. For right now, I felt like I wanted to support the gooseneck so that I was not lifting as much weight with the halyard line. This way...
thx.
Go pro surfboard mounts. It has an extra piece so you can tether it in case the main mount fails. Clean the surface before applying, I got a pack a few years ago and used it on kids boogie boards. Not had it come off. My go pro is pretty old so I"m not too worried about it at this point...
Started sailing last summer taking the sailing dinghy out about 1/2 a dozen times.
I have about that much time on this new to me 1969 Sunfish.
Put a new sail on it this week and this is the 4th time out with my new setup so I can paddle out of the canal to cleaner wind. I just don't trust...
What is purpose of tube? to limit how much the 2 end pieces clamp down so you can tighten it but not put stress on the plates to bend out of shape? My bolt is bent and is kind of tight even before I get "too tight" to the point the rudder has no play.
OK, so thanks for all the suggestions so far.
I took the sunfish out 2 times this weekend.
Some more info
The end of the canal is 6 houses down. So I'm not that far from the river that feeds into the bay where I will sail.
I'm on the East Coast in Ocean City MD and the wind predominantly comes...
I have a 1969 Alcort Sunfish I just got used.
I just started sailing last summer w/ a Walker Bay sailing dinghy
I keep my sunfish at my house on a Canal so I have to drop it over a bulkhead and sail off from the canal. The winds are nasty in the canal the closer you get to the bulkhead and...
