    Quick Sail Dropping

I'm new but here is what I do: Turn into the wind close to shore, just after I turn into wind and am "in irons" I lean forward and uncleat main, typically the sail will gently fall onto the deck however on occasion it has landed in the water. This is not a big deal. After I trailer I raise it...

    Best Landing Strategies

I reread the original post. Since you are launching/landing from a dock just turn upwind as you approach. As soon as you turn into the wind uncleat the main and let drop to the deck. Then use a painter line to tie to dock while you get dolly. This is how I land downwind on beach between 2...

    Best Landing Strategies

I'd think a 2.5-5 lb dumb bell could be easily tired to the hiking strap or maybe to the bottom of mast with a small towel to prevent marring deck. Come in close, throw it out get the dolly. If public area may not be wise to leave it out with buoy while sailing.

    American Sail's SunBlazer

Why not call American sail and ask about Aqua Finn vs Sunblazer. If you are spending 4K may as well et the craft better suited to your needs. JMO

    American Sail's SunBlazer

Looks like the Sunblazer may have replaced the Aqua Finn. Looks like same boat. The sail is American made, in Florida I believe. The hull is made in S. Carolina .

    American Sail's SunBlazer

Not familiar with that but I just bought an American Sail Aqua Finn and it is almost a clone of the Sunfish. It has sleeved sail as opposed to the rings and as i understand it therefore a bit less adjustability for conditions but i don't care. I am a new sailor and have no complaints. I see...

Adding cleat to base of mast

Being new I am likely overthinking this. On my clonefish the halyard runs through a fairlead just aft of the mast step and is then cleated just in front of the cockpit. I would think this setup leads to a bit of stress to the deck. Is there any point to adding a cleat to the base of the mast...

    Why Designed With Sail Rings??

But if you only have attachment at the front and back of the Sail wouldn't you lose a lot of air along the length of the boom being new to this I'm not all that clear on sailing aerodynamics but it would seem the more sail you have attached along the length of the Boom the more air you would...

    Why Designed With Sail Rings??

Thanks , LaLi . Totally new to this. So ropes are lines except for the line which raises the sail which is called a halyard and the line controlling the main which is the mainsheet. As the jib line would be a jib sheet. Sheets are in the end lines. I see how I have little room the adjust...

    Why Designed With Sail Rings??

Not sure I understand, but I am a new sailor. I have a clonefish (AquaFinn) which is sleeved and not clear on the gap you speak of. Looks like my spars cross mast as in the Sunfish.

    Why Designed With Sail Rings??

Title says it all. I did a search and found nothing. I am curious as to why the Sunfish was designed with rings as opposed to a sleeved sail through which you would insert the spars. I'm no engineer but I would think a sleeved setup would be stronger and less spots for air to "spill out"...

    Cam cleat for new sailor

Thanks everybody for your help. I wound up with a Ronstan 55 mm Orbit ratchet block. What a difference . So much less stress on my hand and arm. Sailing is now a pleasure. Also discovered what an accidental jibe is!! Need to work on my downwind. As an aside my clonefish has a sleeved sail...

    Cam cleat for new sailor

LaLi: I appreciate the banter between 2 sailors. I do it all the time on surf ski and mountain bike forums. of course I am always right !! RE: Ratchet block. After looking at prices for ratchet/cleat combo I stick with just the ratchet block. Not so sure I need an automatic version. Likely...

    Cam cleat for new sailor

As a new sailor I appreciate all the replies. Of course I am sold on the ratchet block and now must decide between ratchet or "Ratchomatic". Also enjoyed Andy's video on the ratchet/cleat combo. Not sure which way I will go. Last question: My current set up is a spring loaded main sheet...

    Cam cleat for new sailor

Got it. When sheeting in device clicks (ratchets) and no friction. However when sheeting out (letting line out) the line simply rubs against the sheave and that friction is what eases the pull on the hand/arm. Poor analogy but i suppose same type of friction if one were to let out line as it...

    Cam cleat for new sailor

Tag: I watched both those videos yesterday. Did not really help. I may call Harken today for a better explanation. I understand you can switch off ratchet for light air but still not clear on how to regulate speed of easing out line. I see how the mechanism grips the line to take pressure...

    Cam cleat for new sailor

So I have been looking at ratchet blocks and as I understand them they do not make it easier to take up line but rather make it easier to ease out (if this is correct term) line. They basically take the pulling pressure off your hand. I see some can also be turned on or off. What I cannot...

    Cam cleat for new sailor

I see I can change out my mainsheet pulley for a so called cam cleat( ability to lock mainsheet ) As a new sailor am I better off keeping what I have so I am always holding the sheet? Seems like it would be nice to lock the main sheet for an extended run and give my hand a rest but on the...
