Laser (1980) configuration

We have a laser of year 1980 that I am rebuilding. It has 2 sails. The standard one and a smaller one. When I look at the parts catalog for the laser, they show different lower mast for different sail size. On ours, it's the upper portion of the mast that is shorter.

Does anyone know when they change from different upper mast to different lower mast to accommodate the smaller sail and what would be the size of that older smaller sail?

The boat has been built by Performance Sailcraft in Pointe-claire, Quebec, Canada.

Thank you.

Sounds like you have the infamous "M" rig, a failed attempt at a smaller sail for lightweight sailors. It used a shorter top section but the standard bottom section. It wouldn't bend off in a breeze to de-power the sail, kind of defeating the purpose. The newer Radial rig (created some time in the early 90s) uses a shorter, bender bottom section with the standard top section.

Thanks Torrid.

Do you know if the actual mast sections for the standard rig the same as our standard rig mast sections?

Ok. I read my previous post and it maybe not in the best english. I'll try to do better.

Do you know if the latest standard rig mast sections (upper and lower) have the same dimensions as our 1980 standard mast sections?

If so, we will need only the lower radial mast section to use a radial sail.

Anyone?

Standard upper and lower sections are the same now as in 1980. You would need to get a new Radial lower section AND Radial sail. Your old M-rig sail will not work properly with a new Radial lower section.
