It’s very satisfying. I did mine I think by hand. Start with a rough grit and work your way up, using polishing compound at the last several stages, with wet/dry sandpaper.
The originalKits did indeed have a wooden mast. Unfortunately they almost universally snapped under use. The company shipped replacement tapered aluminum masts.

I was gifted a marine radio for Christmas when I started to restore Fishnet, (as well as an awesome PFD). If I’m a large bidy if water, the fully charged radio will be with me. Period.
